Evaluation and Planning Process
Evaluation and Therapy Planning Process
It is important to understand the evaluation and therapy planning process. Initially, the teacher or the parent may make a referral for a speech therapy evaluation. The parent must sign a consent form for the evaluation to begin. That evaluation will be completed using nationally standardized tests as well as informal observation. If the student is eligible, a plan will be drawn up for therapy.
This plan is called the Individualized Education Program, or IEP. A working draft of the IEP is developed by the therapist, and then reviewed and modified by the IEP team, which includes teachers, school staff, therapists and parents. When the IEP is finalized, therapy begins at school.
